Homebuyer Education classes

RIHousing and our partners offer informational sessions to help you better understand the process of buying and keeping a home. Customers who are first-time homebuyers are required to participate in one of these classes prior to closing on a RIHousing loan. To best suit your needs, interests and personal schedule, RIHousing and our partners offer these classes both in-person and online.

RIHousing Homebuyer Education classes
If you are beginning to think about homeownership, or are interested in learning more about what it takes to become a homeowner, RIHousing encourages you to sign up for a Homebuyer Education class. Our classes are offered both in-person and online to meet the needs of every customer. More information on both of these convenient class options can be found below.

*Please note that the completion of RIHousing’s Homebuyer Education class may not satisfy the Homebuyer Education Requirements for other lenders or agencies providing down payment and/or closing cost assistance.

In-person classes
In-person Homebuyer Education classes are held at convenient locations throughout Rhode Island. They are open to all homebuyers interested in learning to become successful homeowners. Use the link below to view the current class schedule and register for an upcoming class.

Online classes
If you are unable to attend an in-person class, our online Homebuyer Education option may be the right choice for you. The online course features the same basic principles taught at the in-person class, and it allows you to complete the material at your own pace. Our online class provides you with the option of taking the class from the comfort of your home, office or anywhere you access the Internet. The class is offered in both English and Spanish through eHome America for a one-time fee of $50.

NEW! 203(k) Homebuyer Education (FirstHomes100+)
We’ve added a 203(k) homebuyer education course for those homebuyers who are considering purchasing a home in need of repairs. The course will help you understand the loan program, qualifications and how to apply. Homebuyers who intend to utilize our FHA 203(k) loan (also referred to as out FirstHomes100+ loan) are required to complete this course. Others are welcome to take the course as it covers important information you will need to know if you are considering purchasing a home needing repairs.

Multi-family Homebuyer Education classes
FirstHomes customers planning to purchase a two- three- or four-family property are required to complete Landlord-Tenant education in addition to Homebuyer Education prior to closing. The Landlord-Tenant class, offered through The Housing Network of Rhode Island, meets at convenient locations throughout the state and is offered in English and Spanish. Learn about leasing, repairs and everything else you will need to know in order to be a successful landlord. There is a fee to attend this class.

Online Multi-family Homebuyer Education classes
Borrowers who wish to purchase a multi-family property may also satisfy the Landlord-Tenant Education requirement by completing MGIC's free online course, “Becoming a Landlord.”

The Homeownership Connection Homebuyer Education classes
The Homeownership Connection offers a range of programs for those who are ready to buy a home today or need more time to prepare for homeownership as well as those who are already homeowners. Wherever you fit in, the Homeownership Connection can offer you classes, individual counseling and/or workshops that will expand your homeownership opportunities. Classes, available in English and Spanish, are offered at convenient locations throughout the state.
